Here in North Carolina, we are jumping into week 5 of the stay-at-home order. To be honest, it's been incredibly difficult to find a good cadence for everyone between work, Liam's school, and the general needs of two nearly-three-year-olds, but we are learning to give ourselves grace in the chaos and also learning that maybe those items that we thought would make or break our parenting isn't truly that. (Screen time for all!)

The other thing that I have struggled with is getting ready each day. Most of it has to do with the fact that I'm getting up much earlier to get some work done before the rest of the house wakes up and then by the time they do, we are at a full court press to bedtime leaving me little time to get myself ready. None-the-less, I am determined to take a minute to at least wash my face and change out of my pajamas and to that end, I thought I'd share some of my favorite stay-at-home looks from over the past week that aren't entirely extra. Though I do appreciate a good extra look, I also acknowledge that I am not (nor are many people) in a very 'extra' mood these days.
I typically wear some work of workout gear for some portion of the day self-isolating or not, but these days, it's more all day than a portion of it. And that calls for cute work-out gear. Over the past year, as I've worked out more, I've need to get more stuff and I love a good Ultracor yoga pant. 10/10 would highly recommend. Also, if you are looking for a great variety of work-outs to stream from home, check out Fit Atelier's Streaming services. Their beautiful location doors might be shut, but their instructors are filming work-outs from home and they are getting pushed out frequently.

We started going to Disney (unintentionally) regularly when Liam was a little over three years old. Being a bit of a doubter myself, the thought of spending time in endless lines with screaming children, as well as a tremendous amount of cash on a vacation that was less than restful and didn't include sand between my toes with drinks that have umbrellas in them was not my idea of vacation.

Sure it's no lying on a beach somewhere, but, if we are being honest, with three kiddos, I'm not getting any downtime at the beach anyway. Sure, the lines can be long with the occasional screaming child (which may or may not have been my own) and yes, fine, for what you spend on your holiday there you can take a small tour group to Europe. But what I cannot argue is the sheer magic and fun of it all, particularly being able to experience that magic through the eyes of your children.

Now that we've racked up a few trips under our belts, I thought I'd put together all of our recommendations, must-dos, tips, & tricks under one roof for those who might be taking the plunge themselves. The first thing I'd recommend you do is hire a planner to help. I'll get into it later, but they are a tremendous help, sanity-saver, and overall super fun to work with.

Where to stay:
We prefer to stay on the monorail. This is mainly because as long as we have been going, our children get the most out of the Magic Kingdom and it's super easy to get to from the monorail without have to breakdown a stroller in the process. My personal favorite is the Grand Floridian, but more recently we've stayed at The Polynesian. The latter is a little more themed, but not tremendously over the top and is home to Stitch (who our son loves), as well as Dole Whip (which I love).

To dine or not to dine?
One of the biggest questions I am asked and I always have is: do we get a dining plan? Honestly, I don't think there is a tremendous amount of cost savings if you do sign up for the dining plan (thought there is a little bit of cost savings for adults as alcoholic beverages are now included in it at some locations). Either you pay for it up front or you pay for it while you are there, but ultimately it's easier for us to not have to mess with it while we are there and also a little less sticker shock. We've always gotten a dining plan and because we often do several character dining experiences, even with the plan, we end up paying for some meals while we are there even after we've paid for the plan. Either way, it's less of a hassle so we do it anyway.

Some of our favorite places to eat are:
+ In the Magic Kingdom: Be Our Guest (Dinner), The Royal Table (Lunch), Columbia Harbour House (Lunch/Dinner), Skipper Canteen (Dinner)
+ In Hollywood Studios: Woody's Lunchbox (Lunch), The Hollywood Brown Derby (Dinner), Dockside Diner (Lunch), Hollywood & Vine (Lunch & great for younger kids)
+ In Animal Kingdom: Tamu Tamu (for the Dole Whip and as an added bonus, they'll include rum), Yak & Yeti (Lunch/Dinner), Pongu Pongu (for a Rum Blossom, pictured)
+ In Epcot: The Coral Reef (Dinner and ask to sit close to the tank), Yorkshire County Fish House (Lunch/Dinner), Via Napoli (Lunch/Dinner - amazing pizza)
+ Resorts: Ohana (Polynesian), Chef Mickey's (Contemporary), Artist Point (Wilderness Lodge), 1900 Park Fare (Grand Floridian)

You can make dining reservations 180 days prior to your arrival date and I'd recommend you jump on some of the more popular joints (highlighted below) if you want to get in ASAP.

Fast Passes:
If you stay on Disney property, you can make fast past selections 60 days prior to your arrival, initially up to 3 a day. The strategy is to get the fast pass reservations in the morning because once you have used your fast passes in a day, you can get more. People are constantly switching up their schedules depending upon wait times, etc. so it's worthwhile to keep checking back to see if you can bypass the lines in the rides you want to get on. Some rides that are absolutely worth the fast pass:

+ In the Magic Kingdom: The Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, The Flight of Peter Pan* (I know, it's sounds ridiculous, but the line for this one gets insane and kids love it), The Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Barnstormer*, Space Mountain,Thunder Mountain Railroad, Dumbo* (particularly if you have little kids)
+ In Hollywood Studios: Tower of Terror, SlinkyDog, Frozen Sing Along* (though you don't need a FastPass, it's nice because you will likely be there with small kids and waiting in line with them can be special), Smuggler's Run, Mickey and Minnie Runaway Railroad (new and from what I've heard totally worth it)
+ Rise of the Resistance: If you are reading this in 2020, this is an entirely different subset of
FastPass. When you enter the park, you have to pull up the DisneyExperience App and join
a boarding group. Due to the popularity, boarding groups are full generally within the first
15-30 mins of the park being open. When we were there in February, Scott & Liam got to
the park super early (6:30 am - and some were there earlier) and did get in an early group - mostly because there was only 2 of them in their group. From what I am told, it's 100%
worth it.

What to do with little ones:
The first time we took Liam to Disney, he was nearly 4 and tall enough to ride most everything. The girls have been twice now and both times were barely able to ride much. So the question is, why are you bringing kids to Disney if they can't ride the rides. There's plenty to do with younger kiddos like:

+ Go hang with their favorite characters. At Magic Kingdom, there are plenty of character meet and greets, particularly of the princess variety. At Hollywood Studios, there is an entire portion dedicated to Disney Jr, including a dance party and characters to meet. At Epcot, you can find the original characters all over the place, as well as Elsa & Anna, Snow White, Alice in Wonderland, Mary Poppins, Aurora, and Belle.
+ Explore the parks. At Animal Kingdom, there are trails that you can walk and see all sorts of animals that live on the grounds including the tigers, as well as the Wilderness Explorer program where kids walk around and earn badges. Epcot is a great place to stroll around, grab an adult beverage and show the kids the sights and the tastes of the world. (Note: there is tremendous work being done at Epcot while they re-do the front portion of the park, but the world showcase is untouched and open)

What to pack:
Whatever your perspective is on dressing for Disney (matching family outfits, coordinated, or happy to get out of the hotel in one piece), go for comfort. Think tennis shoes (I promise there are some stylish options out there), clothes that easily breathe (because it's always hot in Orlando), and things that can layer (on the occasion that it's chilly in the morning). My go-to for cute Disney clothes for the kids is Gap or Old Navy.

For me, I opt for more themed pieces. A sparkly skirt when we are at Hollywood Studios as a nod to C3P0 paired with matching ears and a fun shirt; something polka dot when we are in the Magic Kingdom like my girl Minnie; a piece in animal print at Animal Kingdom...you get the idea. And when in doubt, I throw on a pair of Minnie ears.

Make your life easier by:
+ Hire a Disney Planner. They are your go-to for all things Disney - they can book dining reservations for you, Fast Passes, connect you with unique experiences in the parks. Do it - they make your life (and trip) that much easier and so much fun.
+ Renting a stroller for the parks once you get there. Orlando Stroller Rentals will drop your stroller off at your resort and pick it back up for you. You can also grab them at the airport.
+ Use Lyft Minnie Vans to get around when you aren't using the Disney Transportation systems. We use the Minnie Vans to get to Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom, as well as Disney Springs.
+ Go ahead and pre-order the PhotoPass. You'll save some money and then you can tack advantage of tons of photo-spots around the parks plus you won't have to ask random people to take pictures of your whole crew. Plus there are some unique photo options at each park that you can take advantage of.

I know that the parks are currently closed, indefinitely as we practice social-distancing and stay healthy, but hopefully these tips help you for when the parks open back up and you can hang out with all of your Disney pals.
Look, I said I was trying to make blogging more of a habit again. I didn't say that I'd be tremendously good at it at first. So I'm back, after dipping my toe back in and then the holidays hit. Maybe it wasn't the best plan. And now things are really heavy. Schools are cancelling classes, people are preparing for hurricanes (or really a pandemic, but to be clear, stock piling bottled water is more hurricane prep), (more importantly) people are getting really sick, and everyone is looking around a little flabbergasted about it all. Or maybe the latter part is just me.

Regardless, my perspective in times like these is control what you can and find happiness in the little things. For me, it's fun, colorful clothing. Also, getting my hair done - which I did and felt like perhaps I should document because I'm looking at the beginning of being housebound with my husband and our three kids for the foreseeable future and I'm not quite sure if my hair will look this good for awhile. Stay safe & healthy out there folks.

Update: This post was originally published in 2015 a few years after I went homebased when we moved to Charlotte. Since then, I've continued to work from home since then and 2020 marks my 7th year of working remotely. As many of us are looking at a new way of working in the wake of COVID-19, I wanted to bring it back. I still follow the advice below and hope that as some of you transition into working from home that you find it helpful to carve out a new normal and routine.

This month marked two years since I transitioned to an 100% home-based role within my company. Initially it was definitely a transition, but now I feel I've settled into not only working from home full time, but also into our new space in Charlotte.

I get a lot of reactions when I tell people that I work from home; everything from 'that's so awesome-you can wear your pajamas all day, everyday' to 'that has got to be difficult.' And truthfully, I think that it is a healthy mix of all of that. So I thought I'd share some of the biggest myths & truths I've learned this past year of working from home, as well as some pictures from our space (which is constantly a work in progress).

You can also read more about my career here.

Myth #1: 'You must love being able to just roll out of bed and into your office.'
While it is extremely convenient to walk down my stairs, turn on our coffee pot, and start working without battling traffic, for me, I find it difficult to be productive without having gotten ready in some capacity,
Truth #1: Put your game face on
Everyone has different opinions when it comes to how you get ready and to what degree you do when working from home. For me, I get ready when I get up in the morning. This usually means make up, clothes, the whole nine yards. Though I don't always get 100% dressed up as I would if I were going into the office (I allow myself one day in work out clothes a week), it helps me to 'start' the day.

Myth #2: 'I could never be productive when working from home.'
Productivity can be a tricky thing. Working from home requires you to be more focused in some areas because there are always more opportunities for distractions. However, I have found that I can actually be more productive without the distractions of office life. What works for me is having a definite structure to your working from home schedule.
Truth #2: Structuring your day helps immensely with productivity
I like to structure my day with 'bookends': a definite start and stop time each day. It's very easy for work to bleed into your personal life when you have your office just a walk away. I start each morning no later than 8 am and end around 5 pm. I also try to get up and walk away from the computer sometime mid day. There have been days when working from home, I would get up and walk straight to my computer and not look up until 7ish. Though somedays I might pick up my emails and do some work after Liam goes down, the working straight through until the evening is not a sustainable model for me.

Myth #3: 'It must be so nice to work from anywhere in your home.'
Yes, the ability to work from the couch or the kitchen table is enticing and sometimes I do move into one of those spaces for a change of scenery, but usually I find that I am more productive & focused with a dedicated space.
Truth #3: Dedicate a space
Even if it is just a corner of a room, have a dedicated space to do your work. It helps not only with leaving your work behind for the evening but also structuring your day a bit better.
Update: when the girls were born, we re-arranged the office and transitioned it as both a space for me to work and also a space for the kids to play. I still have a dedicated space, as do the kids. It's still quite possible to share space and not get too distracted.

Myth #4: 'I bet you love being able to have your little one at home with you since you work from home.'
This usually solicits a deadpan stare from me because clearly these individuals either have the best behaving toddler in the world or they don't understand the nature of work that I do. For someone with a more flexible work schedule, working with a child from home might be completely do-able; for me, it is entirely a non-starter. I spend the majority of the day on conference calls and putting out fires and would not at all be able to take care of, let alone provide the educational content needed to develop a curious toddler mind. Sometimes I even forget to feed myself during the day. #truestory
Truth #4: Compartmentalizing work and life as much as possible
In any career, whether you work from an office or from a home office, there is absolutely bleed-over from aspects of your life in everything you do. Balance is simply unattainable and any attempts to attain it will drive you mad. However, having Liam in daycare helps the bleed-over subside. Whether you have a child, significant other, or any sort of extra curricular activities outside of work, it's important to reserve a little bit of yourself and have a bit of a separation.
Update: Many of us are going to be faced with not only working form home, but also working from home with children there as well given that school is on-hold for the time being. My best advice is to still carve out structure & compartmentalize as much as possible. We are looking at schedules which allow the kids buckets of time to focus on specific activities, as well as dedicating specific times where we schedule teleconferences and working hours. As of now, I think a lot of my work is going to have to be accomplished pre- wake up and post-night time for the time being. Which, though not ideal, will be fine as it is only for a set amount of time.

A few weeks ago, I did a thing. It was not an impulsive thing, but something that I have been thinking about for years. Another tattoo. Yes, another. I have several that I've acquired over the years. Interestingly enough, none that I regret or wish that I had made a different choice. Mostly because I appreciate that they are memories from time points in my life. One from the first week of college that I got with my best friend, another one that I got with my sister, one that I got with Scott around the first anniversary of our marriage - to name a few.

This one I toiled over for the better part of a year - trying to find the right artist because I wanted a very specific style (I ended up at Tattoo Me and Violet was my artist), getting put on her wait list, and then designing it. It's something to represent our family (5 stars, all variations of the two that represent Scott & I) within my own astrological sign (Aries) and the connectors spell out love in morse code.

Deciding to get a tattoo and it's subsequent design in a deeply personal decision. It's not something I'd ever recommend anyone rush into. Do you research, look at artist's work online, ask people who you see out (if you like their pieces) where they had their work done. Once you've picked your artist, work with them to get your design right; don't worry if you don't agree with what they are designing, be collaborative, speak up about what you want and where you want it (we adjusted the placement of mine several times before we got it right). As for me, I love the final product and am very happy to wear my heart(s) on my sleeve (or arm, as it were).

Hi. Remember me? I can't believe that I haven't been back to this space since May. MAY. Yes, I know for someone who used to blog more regularly, it seems like years. And truthfully it felt like both years or mere seconds, but that's how life goes these days.

[ dress (size up, this is a medium) // booties (size up by half a size & on MAJOR sale) // sunnies]

I could wax poetic about how I needed to take a break (though I did) and refocus on our (very chaotic) family (which I did), but the truth of it is, the days got away from me. And days turned into weeks and weeks into months and now we are the day before Thanksgiving. Navigating life as a family of 5 with an active second grader and a set of two year olds has been a lesson in grace and patience with myself. It's been fun, it's been challenging, it's been soul-crushing, it's been hysterical, it's been crazy, it's been hard, it's been beautiful, and it's been (very) messy. It's a time in our lives that I simultaneously don't take for granted because I know the days are long but the years are short, but also make me want to chug a bottle of wine and slather myself in CBD oil at the end of the day to calm down. I've come to appreciate that this is the juxtaposition of life and particularly motherhood.

In terms of what I'm going to be doing with this space next, I can't exactly say. I want to get back into visiting it more regularly and I hope that you do too. (You can always keep up with our shenanigans over on instagram if you don't already). In the meantime, take a gander at this dress & booties. The dress is super comfortable (and I'll be sporting it this Thanksgiving) and the booties are on constant rotation in my wardrobe these days. It's really the perfect mix of comfort and edge to make it through the holiday (with room to spare for all of the extra goodness I'll be eating).

Hope you & yours have a lovely Thanksgiving holiday! Looking forward to seeing you back around here.

It's already heating up in NC right now....like upper 80s hot . Which always leaves me scrambling to find that perfect summer dress. One that I can take me from poolside to cocktails plus it has pockets <insert every girls' squeal here>.

But don't worry, I'm not waiting until summer actually hits to break this bad boy out. I've worn it about (what feels like) 30 times since purchasing it, or maybe that's how many times I've wanted to put it on. Easy, breezy, and versatile - all what I need in my life these days.

During last week's Mom Talk Tuesday, some of my insight I give is about finding your tribe of people. It's something that, though I only devoted a few sentences to it, I couldn't live without. I've been fortunate enough in my life to be surrounded by truly incredibly people. People with different backgrounds, experiences - some with no kids, one kid, a few kids - people who have loved & lost and all of them have lent themselves to me. They are insightful, hilarious, forgiving, and beautiful people both insight and out. I'm eternally grateful for them.

And I had an opportunity to hang with some of those amazing humans a few weeks ago for a mother's day brunch at Josephine's gorgeous new home. There's something about time with friends that is just good for the soul. There were a lot of laughs, amazing food, & scrumptious drinks. Not to mention beautiful decor & florals. It was the perfect way to kick off the season & also a great idea to celebrate the other mothers & friends in your life.

Leopard continues to be everywhere right now and I simply fell in love with this skirt when I saw it. Having a traditional leopard print skirt already in my arsenal, finding one that was an alternative color, to me, justified an additional one. But let's me real, I can justify practically any purchase if I try hard enough.

photo ariana clare

When my dear friend Maggie from The Polished Closets invited me to be a part of her Mom Talk Tuesday series, I jumped at the chance. Not only does Maggie serve as a part of my tribe of people, she's also my gut-check for parenting (her son & our girls are only a few months a part), she's always happy to celebrate large & small victories over a glass of wine, plus she has fantastic style. After you are done over here, I hope you head on over to Maggie's site, as well as Nina's to read their take on balance in motherhood.

I've written on the topic of balance as a working mother before, but this was before we added two more little ones to our family. Now even more than ever, balance is a sticky wicket. The more that I attempt to attain it, the less it seems within my grasp. Between a full-time gig, an active 7-year-old, a set of nearly-two-year-olds, a husband, & a dog - I have a lot of balls in the air. In fact, how I refer to our lives these days is an exercise in juggling.

And here's a very well kept secret I'm sharing today - I don't excel in juggling whether it be literal or metaphorical. It's definitely an intentional practice and something that I work tremendously hard to maintain. And what comes with that are some tips & tools that I subscribe to that help that juggling act go a little easier in our day to day.

Flexibility is the key to getting through the day, the week, the year.
I will be the first person to cop to the fact that I am a Type A person. I thrive in a structured, controlled environment. There's some theories out there that children do as well. However, if there is one thing that I know for certain is that children are unpredictable even with out best efforts to make things are consistent for them as possible. I found that the more that I got set on a certain way of doing things, when things (inevitably) went awry, I got more bent out shape (as do the kids). There are days that go smoothly & there are days that are, well, complete shit. Learning to roll with the punches, adjusting, & course correcting as need be & being okay with it are paramount to my success in parenting and managing to juggle both work & life.

Determine what is worth your time, energy, & effort - then farm the rest out.
In this day & age when everything is so carefully & beautifully curated around us, it's easy to fall into the trap that you have to do it all. I stand by the fact that you don't. Prioritize what is important to you and find a way to farm out the rest. For someone who works a traditional 9-5, 5 days a week job, I try to find services that can help out either on week nights and/or over the weekend. We value time with our family since we don't get a ton during the week. So services which can give us time back over the weekends are where we look to farm out - Cut out doing laundry by hiring a laundry service ; Hire a housekeeper to come into your home even once a month; Bring in someone to take care of your lawn; Order food on a weeknight from a local restaurant via a food delivery service (we love DoorDash). Basically finding anything that makes your life a little easier and gives you time back in your day.

Find your tribe & keep them close.
I mentioned earlier that Maggie is a part of that tribe. I cannot tell you how much I rely on these people - they are my sounding-boards, my gut-checks, they laugh with me, cry with me, curse with me. They've been with me from coffee to cocktails to late night ice cream. Motherhood is hard, but it's even harder in a silo. You don't always have to share the exact same parenting mantras, but when you have a group of people who get you & support you, it makes this adventure a lot easier.

Accept you don't have to be all things to all people.
Everyone wants to be able to do it all, but I truly believe that you don't have to do it all in the traditional sense. Rather, I believe that you should do your own version of doing it all. And that includes knowing that it's OK to let go of what isn't important to you or a priority.

It's OK to say No

It's OK to guard your time

It's OK to be all things to your people, but not all people.

Carve out time for yourself & guard it well.
Self-care is a big term these days, but what it really comes down to is finding something for yourself whether it be an activity like working out, taking time to take physical care of yourself, or even just finding time to sit quietly without a thousand things pulling at you. Over the past six months, I've started to carve out time for myself by working out. We also try very hard to stick to a strict bedtime - having time to decompress at the end of the day even after we tidy up the house, is tremendously important to feeling more balanced for me.

and lastly, always carry snacks.
I have found that very few things can't be fixed or righted with a snack. (Even if it's for you & not the smaller brethren that you manage).

I've said it before and I will say it again, if I had a signature print, it would be the polka dot. I really don't discriminate when it comes to polka dots - large, small, colored - I am here for it. And this Spring, I am living my best life with all of the options that are out there.

The best thing about polka dots is that they are super versatile - from work to play, you can break them out for any occasion. This top is a great example of that. I've worn it from work meetings to under overalls <insert your favorite clueless or farmer joke here>. I'll tell you this though, overalls are where it's at.
With last Wednesday being the first official day of Spring, I was more than eager to break out the florals. Though I stand firm that florals belong year-round, with the sun being out more now it just puts you in a particular mood for florals. Even though they aren't groundbreaking for spring, they still are a fun and playful way to dress for the season in a very easy way.
If you are new to these parts, you should probably know about me is that I love Valentine's Day. I get it - it's corny and sugary and a manufactured holiday, but whether it's the pink or the saccharine sweetness - I'm here for it. Usually Scott and I don't like to fight the crowds on the holiday and have a nice dinner just us after the kiddos go down. However, this year we decided to go a different course. Our schedules are a little insane these next couple of weeks so we opted to go out instead. We have a sitter, a nice dinner planned, and we are going to see the Charlotte Ballet's Innovative Works.
With my love of Valentine's Day, it should come as no surprise that I love a good themed outfit. And this one hits all the marks - fun prints, an unexpected tight, & a pop of color. This dress has the right amount of flounce, ruffle, and is such a fun pattern.

I have to say that I'm a bit of a skincare and skincare product skeptic. It takes a lot (data, results, etc.) for me to buy-into something. When I started to hear about dermaplaning, I was more than skeptical and also a little intimidated. You, of course, can have this done by a professional, but you can also do it at home. It's important to note here that I am by no means a medical professional. I'd recommend that you do your research and perhaps consult one prior to doing any of this.

Before I get into all of that, let's take a few steps back and discuss what dermaplaning is. In it's purest sense, dermaplaning is a method of exfoliation whereby a surgical scalpel is used to gently scrape off of the surface of your face (any peach fuzz is removed in the process as well). It's garnered a bit of a cult following because the build-up of dead skin cells can lead to break-outs, as well as making your skin appear more dull. Additionally, it helps with absorption of all of that product that we spend so much on to moisturize and combat aging. It's been adapted for home use with the use of this tool. If you are reading between the lines here, dermaplaning is the equivalent to shaving your face. I know, for years you've been warned of the dangers of this - your hair will grow back more course, etc., etc. - but that's simply not true.

So yes, taking a razor to your face with no real training seems a little intimidating. But I arrived armed with the help of Jordan Harper. And more specifically, this video. (As an aside, Jordan is a great person to follow for skincare! If you are vaguely interested or looking for tips, hit her up!) There's a couple keys to this practice: start with a clean, dry face; slow & steady; and follow-up after with a retinol (which promotes skin cell turnover). I'd recommend that at the most you use the twinkle razors twice. I could definitely tell a difference the second time I used it though there's a school of thought that you can use them up to 4 times.

The verdict: I'm 100% a convert. In just the three weeks that I've dermaplaned, I've noticed a significant difference in the appearance of my skin. It's more radiant, it's more supple (I suspect because it is absorbing product better), and my makeup sits far better on my face than before. I would say that if you are the very least bit interested, you should try it. And if you do try it, I'd love to hear your experience and results.

Or maybe not-so-new me given that we are already half-way through January and my holiday hiatus has ran a little long. Regardless, I wanted to share this dress - which is a stunner and comes in a tremendous amount of options or prints. I wore it to the Justin Timberlake concert here in Charlotte last week with sneakers. Yes, you read that correctly - SNEAKERS (which sadly are no longer available, but I've linked a similar pair below). So maybe that's the new me.
Temperatures were unusually warmer so I didn't have to wear tights with it, but since the weather has dipped a bit, I plan to pair it with tights and OTK boots or booties. I suspect this dress will be one that I'll continue to reach for over and over again.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, shopping for me tends to be a little harder for me than anyone else. Particularly my husband. I've put together some items what not only I love, but I've heard him speaking about (or he has been using).

1. google home (and mini)

I say this a little begrudgingly because I am not a google fan; however, a few years ago, Scott decided that we were going to get a Google home. We have one in our downstairs and a mini in our room. I have to say, that despite my efforts to not be a fan, it's grown on me. This year, he wants to add the Hub.

2. a fun (but useful) book

This has been on hubs list for several years. In our household, we are a big fan of a coffeetable book and this one is really great. Shucking an oyster is definitely a skill that you need to learn (least you stab yourself with a shucker).

3. a fancy watch

I'm a lover of a good timepiece. Nixon is a great option and definitely a fun statement piece. Also, I really like the idea of a reminder of someone that you can wear throughout the day.

4. happy feet

There's an old adage that says you shouldn't buy shoes for someone because they'll walk out of your life. I don't know if I necessarily subscribe to that, but Scott does. So to circumvent that, I buy fun socks.

5. sporty

We dig a good athleisure wear over here. Something about comfy pants is just so good and so easy, particularly this time of year. Throw in some great headphones and it's almost like you are working out....almost.

It takes a lot for me to ask the question, Is this dress too much?. I did just that when I put this dress on. But with most things, half of the battle is owning it and I think we can all agree that I tend to run on the higher end of the extra-spectrum. Besides, what better place to rock this dress than in Mexico over the weekend?

It turned out to be the perfect dress for the dinner we attended to kick-off the weekend festivities for one of my dear friend's wedding. My advice for dressing outside of your comfort zone: if the dress is fun, easy, and super comfortable - rock it. Like I said, owning it is half of the battle.

Shopping for my girlfriends happens to be one of my favorite activities. I often look for items that they wouldn't necessarily buy for themselves and are either unique or something that makes their lives a little easier or more fun.

!function(d,s,id){var e, p = /^http:/.test(d.location) ?

1. 23andme

Maybe it's the big science nerd it me, but I love the idea of gifting something like this. Sure it's on the pricier end of things, but I've heard such great feedback on what information people get out of these kits.

2. Ember Mug

I've written about it before and it is hands down my favorite gift I've received as of late. For someone who perpetually is distracted and cannot get through a cup of coffee while it's still warm (or if you just like to take your time), it's an item that you wouldn't necessarily think to purchase for yourself, but it an AWESOME gift for hot beverage lovers.

3. Fragrance Sampler

Let's just all agree that Sephora does holiday gifts right, shall we? Buying perfume can be such a personal thing and often times people are intimidated because you are committing to something that you might not end up liking in the long term. This kit has samples of all of the best, plus a voucher to collect a full size of the one that you end up liking the best.

4. Comfy slippers

I know we all have a love/hate relationship with Uggs. But they are just so darn comfy and I can't quit them. I feel the same about their slippers. These satin lovelies up the game a little and are just so pretty.

5. Silk pillowcase

This is another item that falls into the I wouldn't buy it for myself, but it is a game changer camp. I have been using one for awhile now and it's wonderful for your fair and face. Plus it feels a little luxurious.

6. Capri Blue Candle
This candle, it's a crowd pleaser. If you've ever been into Anthropologie, you've smelled it. It's one of those things that it's always so nice to receive as a gift because you can never have enough.

This color combo might just be my new favorite. Being a lover of a good feminine color combination, naturally I'd be down with purple & pink, but there's also something about the mixture of a warm, soft (and sparkly) sweater and comfy, lace pants that really just knocks it out of the park for me. These pants I've had for quite some time, but they are such a fan favorite that JCrew keeps bringing them back year after year (and I own them in several colors).

[sweater // lace pants // kicks // baubles (here) // sunnies]

It would be the perfect look for a family or friend get-together and you can even kick the sweater up a notch with a pleated skirt (either metallic or animal print or sequins, dealers choice). Also, I'm working on a theory that purple (of an shade) is this season's red. Don't get me wrong, it's never going to replace red as a holiday color, but it's a new, fresh way to be festive without being predictable.

Well, here we are again - me in very very very deep denial that the holidays are a-coming and retailers very very very aggressively reminding me that Thanksgiving is THIS WEEK and Christmas is 4 weeks. It happens every year. And yet every year I find myself at this very same crossroad - to suck it up and give into the fact that if I don't start now, I'll be pulling my hair out in 4 weeks or to continue to live in denial. Either way, I thought I'd kick off my gift guides this year with some picks for the kiddos in your life.

Gifts for kids tend to get more and more tricky as the years press on. First, can we all agree we have enough plastic crap in our households, but that sadly the great juxtaposition that is life as a parent is that kids WANT the plastic crap? Moreover, the uglier the better. Don't get me wrong - there are some lovely sets out there and I envy the people who have playrooms that are filled with muted tones of beige and pastels. This is not my reality and I've found that at the end of the day, my kids really dig those bright, primary colored filled plastic toys. The other thing is that as the years go on, I find myself trying to be more purposeful with our gifts and gifts to our little friends. Generally gifts for kiddos fall into several buckets for me.

Books: I love a good book. Though, depending on the kid, it might not be as appreciated by the recipient than the parent but there are some crowd-pleasers that work for all. The Illustrated Harry Potter series is one of those. If you think your kids are too young for them, this is a great way to introduce them to the Wizarding World and when Liam was younger, we read the individual chapters as mini-stories. For younger kids, we really like the BabyLit series which introduces classic pieces of literature in tangible ways for kids to learn about counting, colors, animals, etc.

Games: Our family loves a good game - from Uno to Monopoly to Chess - we are all in. Granted the girls are a little young to partake just yet, but they'll be indoctrinated soon enough. In the meantime, you'll find us playing Race to the Treasure, Sneaky Snaky Squirrel, or Trouble. They are great ways to give a fun gift that brings the family together intentionally and spend some good 'ol quality time together.

Toys: Refer back to the top of the post as to my feelings on toys. I get they are by far, the more fun gifts to give, kids love them, and they are the most exciting. If this is the route you are going, we love the brand Green Toys. Legos, and Baby Einstein.

Other ideas: If you know someone who's dress-up game is strong, try a superhero or a princess (Did you hear that Disney is doing a Princess subscription box?!). If you know a kid who is into learning about the world around them, check out Little Passports and gift them something that gives year-round. Outdoor or sports activities are always big in our household - we love both this scooter and this indoor basketball hoop (you'd be shocked how much use this gets). If you have a newer little friend you are buying for, we love a good stuffed animal (jellycat is our favorite). And last but certainly not least, the 'dreaded' electronics. As much as everyone loves to feign hate of tablets, we love the Kindle Fire. It really is the best one out there and CRUCIAL for our survival during trips.

Over the weekend, I attended a black tie wedding. Being someone who has prided myself on having a variety of options in my closet for such an event, I uncharacteristically found myself at a loss. Usually I can reach into my closet depth and figure something out, but not this time. I'd have an unsuccessful attempt at Rent the Runway in the past, but decided to take a chance for this event and I was not disappointed.

Formal dresses can be a bit overwhelming for someone with such a petite stature which I why I opted for a midi-length dress. With the rich jewel tones, it would be perfect for a fun winter party to a more formal event. With the temps being as chilly as it was, I opted to cool it up a bit with a fun leather jacket. Dress if up with some sparkly accessories and you are good to go.

It's not a secret in these parts that I'm a Francophile. From the culture, to the geography, to the je ne sais quoi, I'm here for it all the time. Sure, they get a bad rap, but what's not to love about a group of people who gave us the croissant?

If you caught up with us last week, you'll know that unlike my family, I love family pictures. Almost as much as I love good stationary & paper products. Today, I'm teaming up with Minted to run through some of my favorite holiday card go-tos for this year.

Don't roll your eyes just yet. I know it's not even Halloween and perhaps the mere thought of the holidays are enough to send you to the corner to rock in the fetal position, but in our household, I have to do strike while the iron is hot. Also, the holiday is coming whether you are ready for it or not. So big kid pants on, OK.

The other component is that with everything that we have going on in our household, I have to use services that make my life easier. Minted is just that - from easy to preview card options (see below) to even addressing your envelopes for you (yes, please & thank you), getting our cards done is as easy as 1-2-3.

Botanical - I actually love the idea of something a little different for a card.

A further testament to Minted is that we've used them for years. It's that time of year again, when mothers everywhere are forcing their family out into a field to snap a coveted photo for holiday cards. If you are anything like my family, there's a lot of whining leading up to it, arguing over who wants to wear what, and then utter chaos during the actual session which leaves me wondering if we actually got a shot where the majority of of family is even looking at the photo. Even with all of this, we've always loved our family photos and they are treasured snapshots.
Maybe you have the family photo game locked down. Maybe you are like us and it's a bit of a struggle bus. Regardless of where you sit, there are definitely some take-aways that I recommend to everyone when they are going down this rabbit hole.

[untamed marketing]

+ Be Authentic - whether that applies to what you choose to wear, the location of your photos, or how you behave during the shoot. You want your photos to be representative of you and your family.

+ Be Comfortable - trust me, now is not the time to put on something that you are going to be tugging at while carrying your children or chasing them around. Your lack of comfort will show up in the photos.

+ Hire a professional & do your research - seek out someone's work that you like & hire someone who you are comfortable with. These days everyone with a camera can be a photographer. In my opinion (and experience), it's always spending a little more to have someone who is a professional photographer take your photos.

+ Have fun - It definitely translates in your photos. Bring items that mean something to you and your family. We have photos with our son and his favorite stuffed animal every year which are some of my favorite images. Also, bring snacks. Never underestimate the power of bribery snacks.
