Friday Eye Candy: Announcement

Have I mentioned that I'm a stationary snob? Well, I am. And in looking for an announcement for our little Liam, nothing was up to par in my opinion. So I enlisted the assistance of a designer (read: Hubs) and based on something we found in an extensive (and exhaustive) search, Hubs designed the above. When my sister was visiting, she took some pictures of the little guy and so we used one of those. I'm super thrilled with how they turned out. And thankful that my husband is such a rockstar creatively.

Tried and True: Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Eraser

Prior to having a child, I was warned: Sleep is a precious commodity once your baby arrives. Like most warnings that I received during my pregnancy, I believed it, but I didn't take into account to what extent these women meant. Now that I am a month (seriously, time has flown!) into motherhood, I can say that even a baby that sleeps well like our peanut, still does not sleep a ton (at least not for consecutive hours). Needless to say that due to this, my beauty regime has required a little tweaking which includes the addition of a kick-butt concealer to hide my oh-so-tired circles under my eyes. Enter Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Eraser Dark Circles Treatment Concealer in Brighter. Several other bloggers (some including mothers) recommended this product and so I went immediately to the drug store and picked some up. I'm not a drug-store beauty product type of person usually. Not because I don't believe the products are any good (most of them are actually better than some beauty counter products), but because I find myself overwhelmed in beauty aisles in Target and like the assistance of a qualified individual to help me navigate the waters. The ability to also try something out and learn the proper application techniques doesn't hurt either. However, this product is fool-proof: easy to apply and instantly makes you look like you've gotten a full 8 plus hours of sleep. It absolutely gets my seal of approval and I would recommend it to all and any of my people.

How To: Care for your Make-up Brushes

The foundation to any good make up collection is your make-up brushes. Investing in a good set of brushes really makes a huge difference in everyday make-up application. And if you are going to invest the money in a good set of brushes, you might as well take care of them.

Here are a few tips to how to clean, care for, and store your make-up brushes that I have found helpful.

You should be washing your brushes pretty frequently to ensure that bacteria doesn't build up in your brushes. I would recommend at a minimum of once a month.

Select a cleanser that is specific for make-up brushes or gentle enough to use on the brushes (MAC Brush Cleanser or Johnson & Johnson Baby Shampoo)

Use warm water to dilute the cleanser and clean the brush gently with your fingers. You should see the pigment begin to come off of the brush. Continue until the water runs clear and there is no visible pigment left on the brush.

Lay flat to dry overnight on a paper towel (DO NOT place on end in container to dry)

Once the brushes are dry, store them as usual. I would recommend that you store them on-end in an open container. This allows the brushes to not roll around in a make up bag and continue to get dirty or pick up other particles of other makeups that may be loose.

If you are looking to start your make-up brush collection, I would recommend going to speak to someone at a beauty counter. MAC Cosmetics are some of my favorite brushes (especially for eye makeup and blush), but other brands such as Bobbi Brown and Trish McEvoy make excellent brushes as well. Most of these brands have starter kits that you can purchase and have individual brushes to supplement for your specific beauty needs. I personally use a combination of the Bare Escentuals (for face), Laura Mercier (for face), and MAC Brushes (eyes and blush).

Other applicators/tools that should be in your beauty drawer: eyelash curler (Shu Uemura is a fave), Tweezers (TweezerMan Slant Tweezers), All Purpose Blender (for those who use foundation/tinted moisturizer - this or this) and a lash/eyebrow comb.

She also has graciously agreed to do a guest blog for me (in all of her spare time...seriously, does she have an extra 12 hours in her day?!) while I adjust to mommyhood. Hello Haute Child in the City readers! I am Meggy from Chasing Davies and happy to be guest posting for Chelsea while she soaks up some amazing baby time with her new little one. Big congrats to you, Chelsea!

As a new mom myself, there are a few things I highly recommend to get by!

1. Best under eye concealer ever. Maybeline Instant Age Rewind Eraser Dark Circles Treatment Concealer in Brighter. Seriously makes me look like I'm bright eyed and bushy tailed, ready for the day, even after only 3 or 4 hours of sleep.

2. My Brest Friend. I held off on getting this thinking it was just more stuff. I was using a regular pillow to assist holding the baby on my lap while I nursed, but was needing 2 hands to do so. After spending most my day nursing, I decided to try this to see if it would free up a hand and so it did. Now I can use my Kindle Fire, phone or even computer off to the side of me while nursing = multitasking!

3. Which brings me to my thrid recommendation - the Kindle Fire or any other sort of tablet/smartphone. With that new free hand, you can stay connected to the world/email. Especially great for late night awake time with baby when there is nothing but crap on TV. I need something to do to keep from falling asleep, or crying of exhaustion.

4. A really great pair of leggings. While trying to catch a few minutes of sleep when your little one does, running between diaper changes and feedings or sitting on the floor trying to entertain the baby - leggings are so super comfortable, but still make you feel like you are wearing real clothes (as opposed to PJs). Not that you won't spend some days, all day, in PJs (ahem...), it's nice to switch it up here and there and wear something you can leave the house in.

5. Comfy (& warm during winter months) slippers. These Target Suede Moccasins are great because they have a rubber sole, which means you can leave the house in them too... which I do, all the time.

6. It's all I can do to take a quick shower, let alone wash my hair and dry it. So I've been using a lot more dry shampoo and washing less... time saver! (I love Suave Professionals Dry Shampoo Spray and cheap, too)

7.Hooter Hiders Nursing Cover - another something I thought I wouldn't need. I figured I'd just excuse myself to another room around other people or use a blanket. Nursing in another room gets isolating and blankets with a wiggly baby can be risky, so I decided to try this out and it really is great. It has a wire to keep the top away from you so you can easily look down to see the baby, wide enough to cover you all up, and pouch it folds up and fits into making throwing it in the baby bag easy.

8.Lansinoh Disposable Nursing Pads - I tried using the reusable ones first, but was constantly leaking beyond them (embarrassing). I haven't leaked onto my clothes at all with these disposable ones. So worth it.

Becoming a new mom, especially if your nursing, it hard work! I found these things to make it all a little bit easier. Good luck, Chelsea and many congrats on your sweet little one. It is the most amazing thing.

Hi Everyone! I'm so thrilled that Chelsea asked me to help out as she adjusts to life with a newborn baby! When we started discussing what to post, she told me how much she loves when I take a celebrity trend and show how real women can style the look for their everyday wear and stay on budget! So immediately I thought of one of my favorite sections from my blog, Steal Her Look For Less. I usually love spotlighting full ensembles, but I thought I would offer up some great jewelry options for all you ladies out there! I was really inspired by all the statement jewels from Golden Globes. However I know how hard it can be to transfer into your day-to-day looks. But don't fret - I've got some fabulous and affordable options! Let's take a look shall we?

Elle Macpherson is a force to be reckoned with at 47. She's just ridiculously stunning. So I was excited to see her walk the red carpet. I was even more excited when I noticed her gorgeous arm candy! I'm a HUGE fan of a stacked wrist - especially when it's colorful and with mixed metals. The best part about this accessory look is that you can pair it with any style casual or dressy. Look to bright and bold colors for an extra outfit pick-me-up. But if you're a bit timid and shy about trying this one stick to a few basic small bracelets and work your way up to a stack. Your friends will all think your so fashion forward, never knowing how little effort it really took.

In my book, Heidi Klum always gets it right. I love that she takes risks and tries new looks, but when she does simple she makes it look so fabulous! How gorgeous is her turquoise bib necklace against a nude colored dress. This kind of necklace is my new obsession - I just received a fabulous blue bib necklace as a gift that I can't stop wearing. For a new look try pairing it with a crew neck sweater, boyfriend jeans and a blazer. Heidi's got the right idea by keeping everything super clean and easy so that the necklace stands as your main focal point. This accessory could also work with a pair of skinnies, a white tee and some pointy pumps. Keep it sweet and simple and you'll knock it out of the park.

Two of my favorite red-headed actresses chose bright and bold statement earrings for their red carpet appearances and I couldn't take my eyes off either one! The gorgeous Julianne Moore chose a fabulous pair of green tassel earrings while Debra Messing donned a crystal geometric pair. Both sets are colorful and cheerful which make great accessory additions. Try wearing yours with a little black dress for your next event or with a basic jeans and tee. Either way you can spice up your ensemble with an elegant and regal style.

In true fashion (my blog is named "Bedazzles" after all!) I couldn't forget about adding some glittering gems to your look! Ok, so you may not be able to afford the vintage Cartier headband that Charlize Theron sported, but you can certainly emulate her look with ease! I'm a huge sucker for anything the sparkles but that doesn't mean you have to limit it your evening look. Try wearing shimmering head wear with a lovely daytime dress and some flats. It will give your overall look a special and adorable finish. Bonus points for keeping your makeup and other jewels low key. Well I hope you have enjoyed my accessory options! What I'll be Wearing this Spring

Over the winter I purchased a blazer from JCrew that was chartreuse. I have now totally embraced the color, which I was a bit reluctant about to begin with and am excited to rock a more brighter shade in the upcoming spring months. I think that it will be a great color to use in conjunction with all of the nautical and prep that we'll be seeing in the upcoming months.

I'm seriously in love with this look and have been rocking it for like 2 years now. I do it with almost every mani. However, I'm kind of getting bored with it and want some new ways to mix it up for this spring/summer. So where else to look for inspiration than Pinterest?

I love just adding an extra nail as an accent. The thumb or middle finger would be so cute instead of just the standard ring finger accent.

You could always just switch the one nail you paint to another finger, any finger would look cute and new. I've seen the pinky finger done by itself and loved the look.

Doing a print on just one nail is fabulous! Stripes, polka dots, etc. Using leftover Sally Hansen Salon Effects would make it so easy!I'm definitely going to be mixing up my mani this year. Changing your nails is such an easy makeover and gives you instant gratification.

Friday Eye Candy: Sky High Heels

It's no secret that I am a fan of high heels and I used to think that the higher the better. 4 inch platform pumps, bring it! Skinny stiletto heels, it's on! It also helps to note that years of dancing en pointe have rendered the nerve endings in my toes dead and therefore it is much easier for me to wear these towering confections than the average person. One of my very best girlfriend and I were chatting the other day and she mentioned how high heels are getting. I hadn't taken much notice, but the more I looked the more I realized that designers are challenging the already towering heights of heels. While I appreciate the looks, I have to wonder, how comfortable are these shoes and how feasible are they for women to walk in?

One of my biggest pet peeves are women who wear fabulous heels, but then have NO idea how to walk in them or rock them. My best advice if you are going to wear these towering beauties is to PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE at home before you make your debut on the street. Also, cushion inserts always help from a comfort level if you are going to invest in them.

For those that may not follow me on Twitter or have caught the earlier announcement post, our little peanut arrived on Wednesday, 08 February. We spent our first weekend at home trying to get into some sort of schedule as parents (there's no hope for him yet), but Hubs has continued to be such a rock. And thanks to my mother who has heroically come to stay with us, we've been able to juggle the transition with as minimal issues as one could hope for.

I'm always on the look out for new types of make-up and creams. BB Creams, beauty balms or blemish balms, are gaining some traction stateside. It's already a hit in Asia, but these creams are truly the multi-tasker of make-ups. These lightweight creams contain SPF, work to moisturize, conceal, and treat skin in one single, simple step. Essentially, it is mean to minimize the need for concealer and foundation by camouflaging lines and imperfections. There are tons of brands who are now including this product in their lines and some even coming to a drug store. I'm a Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer devotee, but I may have to check these BB Creams out!

Weekend in Pictures: Old Wives Tales Edition

Whelp 1 for 2 ain't bad. Sadly no arrival of Baby Mac, but a Giants victory makes Hubs and the Mac household happy.

Some of our friends even gifted us adorable Giants onesies and hats. I guess Liam will have to celebrate a little later than the rest of us.

What many of you may (or may not) know about me, is that my day job is actually in the science field. Yes, beneath all of my labels and gloss, I am a science nerd at heart. That's why it is a testament to my sheer and utter desperation to get Baby Mac out of me that I resorted to old wives tales to coax him out over the weekend.

There is a lot of anecdotal evidence that there are certain things that work to naturally induce labor: spices (basil, oregano, etc.), spicy foods, pineapple, walking, yoga poses, sex, chinese food, eggplant, castor oil...the list goes on and on.* So this weekend, I threw myself into the natural labor induction process - To no avail. Apparently Liam is just particular (as my dear friend assessed after I passed my due date). And so begins the long process of me learning that I am no longer in charge of my life or the events in it. I also am back on the scientific-evidence train.

Other than that, I pretty much reveled in the upcoming Valentines Day. I adore the holiday and pretty much everything that goes with it.

Hopefully by the time this post publishes, Baby Mac will have arrived and the Giants will have won the Super Bowl. However, if he hasn't, Baby Mac has been served his eviction notice. If he doesn't decide to grace us with his presence by Thursday, I'm being induced. (Something that I have mixed feelings about.) This pregnancy has been incredibly easy. It's really hard to complain when I've had such a great experience, but now that I have exceeded the home stretch of pregnancy, I'm longing for several items from my pre-pregnancy days.

Don't get me wrong, giving up all of these things are completely and totally worth it to have a wonderfully amazing little bundle of joy at the end of it all, but there are just some things that I'll be happy to get back at the end of it all.

Honestly, I have mixed feelings about these collaborations with high fashion and lower budget retailers. I think that sometimes they are executed well, but I think it some ways it does somewhat of a disservice to the designer. Offering your designs at a lower price, while allows the designer to broaden their reach and expose people to their designs, it's a slippery slope for the designer. I think there is something to be said for exclusivity for a brand. What are your thoughts? Are you a fan of these collaborations?

Things that made me incredibly happy about last night's SAG awards: the resurgence of fabulous ponytails (Diane Lane, Jane Krakwoski - I'm talkin' to you), the lack of headbands (Thank you celebs for getting the message after the Golden Globes); and Marchesa, Oscar, and McQueen. Here are some of my favorite looks from last night.

McQueen is a favorite of mine and Emma Stone in McQueen is basically perfection. And there was probably not a better dressed or adorable couple on the red carpet than Emily Blunt and John Krasinski. Her Oscar de la Renta paired with his midnight blue tux, to die for. Also, he knew the designer of her gown AND did a little dance at her request during a red carpet interview.

Lea Michele's look for the Golden Globes got a lot of commentary. I personally loved it, but a lot of people thought it wasn't her, it was too grown up. Last night she showed up in Versace looking pretty fantastic. I'm not sure if I would have gone with her shoe choice, but all-in-all, I think it was a win.

Given my recent love of the color mint, I couldn't not include Kaley Cuoco in this Kevaza confection. Gorgeous, loved it. And I even dug the braided handmaiden hair.

I wish I could run down the 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon, mostly because I love him and Kyra Sedgwick. And I want to look like her when I'm older...so at least want the name of her plastic surgeon. I think that she looked flawless and fabulous.

Zoe Saldana rocked a Givenchy frock...absolutely stunning and forward thinking. Loved the white color.

And last but certainly not least, Marchesa. All of the ladies that were dressed by Marchesa looked absolutely amazingly spectacular. I loved all of the dresses (and the ladies who wore them).

Sephora Haul

The other day I spent a lovely Sunday morning at Sephora working with one of their make-up artists to play with new product and get some recommendations. I often find myself in a make-up rut and I love to try out new product and see what works best for me and my skin.

What I tried:

Make-up For Ever HD Foundation, Primer, & Powder: Exclusive to Sephora, this brand is designed with a photo finish in mind. Overall, I really liked the brand, but it was a lot more make up than I was used to. It blended well and looked great on.

Verdict: I might purchase it for use on bigger events, but definitely not everyday.

NARS Laguna and Orgasm: Laguna as a bronzer and Orgasm as a blush. The makeup artist who I worked with did a lot more contouring than I am used to and it looked fantastic. I have NO idea how to re-create the look (although she did instruct me as to how), but I will be YouTubing in the future to get a better understanding.

Verdict: I already use Orgasm and would consider Laguna as a supplement bronzer to my

Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick (which I swear by).

Benefit They're Real Mascara: I've been hearing a lot of hype about this mascara and it really was excellent; however, I'm hooked on Mary Kay's Lash Love.

Verdict: Definitely not switching.

Smashbox Eye Shadow Trio - Auto Expose: I loved how this eye shadow looked with my eye color. It is also fool proof to apply with great coverage and lasting ability.

Verdict: Purchased

Buxom in Dolly: Every year I resolve that I will pay more attention to my lips. I will wear lipstick more. And every year, I fail. This year, I took a step in purchasing a lip color and gloss that I adore. Not only that but this brand plumps your lips and makes them look fuller.

Verdict: Purchased

Make-up For Ever Lip Line Aqua Lip (3C): I suffer from imperfect lips: my top lip is thin and my bottom lip is full. Therefore having to add an extra umphf to my upper lip is a must.

Verdict: Purchased

Ole Henriksen Sheer Transformation: This an an all-natural brand that works to reverse spots, aging, etc. I really liked the light formula. My make-up artist sent me home with a sample and so far it has worked really well with my skin type.

Verdict: Will purchase later once my current daytime moisturizer runs out.

Philosophy Eye Hope Eye Cream: I liked the consistency and I think I do need to up my game as far as eye care is concerned-my dark circles are only going to get worse from here!

Verdict: Seriously considering purchasing later.

Sephora by OPI Nail Color: I've been looking for a rainbow glitter top coat for a while and happily found it in Sephora.

Verdict: Purchased

Bumble & Bumble Styling Creme: An old standby of mine that I love and couple with Josie Maran Oil product. This time of year my fly-aways are a little out of control so I need this additional help to power through.

This is my second month of Birchbox and I have to say that for the minimal monthly fee, I've been incredibly pleased with the quality of product that shows up at my door (and in such a pretty package!). With the goal of assisting us to start the year off with a fresh face and optimistic mood, the theme of January's Birchbox was Clarity.

Included:

Befine Night Cream: To assist achieve glowing skin year-round, which smooths fine lines as you sleep. (Full Size: $30) Overall I liked the product. I think it would make a better summertime moisturizer for my skin needs, but it was sensitive enough that my skin didn't freak and has a nice smell.
Juicy Couture Fragrance: Signature blend of sweet floral notes. (Full Size: $69-89) I have been a fan of Juicy Fragrances for years and love this one.
VMV Hypoallergenics Re-Everything: Eye Serum: Anti-aging eye serum brightens and revives your under eye area (Full size: $80) I really enjoyed this product. I didn't use it long enough to actually identify any specific changes around my eyes, but it was a good consistency and gentle enough that when I got it in my eye, it didn't bother me.
Zoya Nail Polish in Megan (Full Size: $8) This was (surprisingly) my first tangle with Zoya nail polish. I had been reading the hype for quite sometime and I have to say that it definitely lived up to it. Love the consistency as it went on, dried quickly, and was a fabulous color. So far, it also has staying power (an added bonus for women like me who perpetually are hard on their nails.)
Lifestyle Extra: Larabar (Mini): No artificial fillers; just dried fruits, nuts, and other wholesome ingredients. Could eat due to my ridiculous almond allergy. Booooo hissssss.

T minus 8 days until my due date....but who's counting. This weekend we ran a bunch of errands and took it easy, along with celebrated the upcoming birth of another friend's joyful arrival. We have intentionally not put anything on our calendars in the event that Baby Mac wants to join us earlier than planned. (Which I think in retrospect is going to drive me more crazy....)

I also have a serious case of snow envy....I know that I live in the South and I enjoy this region for the moderate temperatures, but can't a girl get a little bit of snow?!?!

Saturday Hubs pretty much knocked it out of the park! He cooked breakfast and then took me to get a mani/pedi while he ran some errands for us. Seriously amazingly good and wonderful man.

Q: In general, how would you describe the Triangle's style aesthetic?

A: I think that the Triangle has a very eclectic mix of styles and that's what is so fantastic about fashion in the Triangle. I can gain fashion inspiration from a variety of different styles, incorporate it into my daily outfits, and make it my own.

Q: .What style trend(s) do you think we'll see develop in the Triangle in 2012? What trend hasn't caught on that you'd love to see us pick up?

A: I think the Triangle has done a great job with keeping up with the latest trends in fashion. The people in this area have a great knack for what works for them and what doesn't, but I would love to see fashion become more mainstream here and be a bit more forward thinking; less reactive and more proactive. I'd love the see people in the Triangle take more risks.

Q: What trends would you like to see go away that you've found to be particular to the Triangle?

A: I would love the see Crocs completely disappear from the face of the earth, as well as Uggs with shorts or skirts. If it's cold enough to wear Uggs, then it is certainly too cold to wear skirts or shorts.

Q: As the year begins, lots of people are thinking about change. What tip or piece of style advice would you offer to someone pondering a style fresh start?

A: Purge your closets! I'm just as guilty as anyone for holding onto clothing, but I've had to make a concerted effort over the years to go through my closet every season and remove clothing that I haven't worn in a year or doesn't fit anymore. Having a closet that isn't full of clutter and clean will allow you to really assess what the holes are in your wardrobe and identify what you need to do from there. Beyond that, my fundamental advice to anyone who is looking to expand their closet or fill in the gaps is to build a strong foundation in your wardrobe. By investing in classic pieces, you'll find it is incredibly easy to build upon those to incorporate the latest trends and upgrade your look.

1. How did your parents come up with your name?

Chelsea was Jane Fonda's character in "On Golden Pond" that my mother watched while she was pregnant with me. (I still haven't seen the movie) And my middle name Anne is part of both of my grandmothers' names (PollyAnne and AnnaMae).

2.Do you typically get your nails done or do them yourself?

Probably about half and half. I like the ability to fancy my nails up with glitter, but I am typically pretty terrible at doing my nails myself so end up paying someone to do them.

3. Do you leave the house without makeup on?

Never; I at least have on mascara and lip gloss.

4. Silver or Gold?

Can I say both?! A while ago I was all about silver, but I have learned to not only wear gold, but embrace it.

5. Where would you like to go on your next vacation?

2012 is our year for domestic travel (Hubs and I alternate every other year between international and domestic) so this year, I'd like to go to Pacific Northwest (Tentatively scheduled for Fall 2012).

6. Name one thing on your bucket list.

Swim with Great White Sharks (yes, I'm obsessed).

7. What is your favorite feature (eyes, smile, etc)?

I like my eyes, mostly because they are a very unique color.

OPI New York City Ballet Collection

I caught wind the other day on the beauty rumor mill that OPI was planning to release an entire collection inspired by the New York City Ballet company. Being a huge fan of the ballet and a former ballerina, I absolutely fell in love with the collection that I read about online. Although little information exists as to when this collection will be released, I have to say that I may actually buy all of them. I love the gentle pastels and the gorgeous shades of pink that are found in this collection and think that it is perfect for the spring. Not to mention I am a true OPI brand devotee. They really make a fantastic nail polish at a great price point.

The theme of fashion at the Golden Globes this year: High Ponytails, Neutrals, and Headbands...oh my!!

Awards season is upon us...and I have to admit in my pre-occupied state of cooking a baby and getting ready for his arrival, I practically overlooked it. What is wrong with me?!?! Sunday's show did not disappoint (How can you not love a drinking Ricky Gervais?!) and here are some of my favorite looks from last night.

Charlize Theron: In Dior and museum piece jewelry (way to up the ante!). Some didn't like the bow, I thought that it was just enough.

Emma Stone: in Lavin. Loved the two-tone and the risk with the eagle belt buckle. I mean how cool is she?!

Jessica Alba: In Gucci. She's made my list for the sole fact that she is my post baby body inspiration, but I do love the dress and thought she looked fabulous.

Lea Michele: In Marchesa. I'm a sucker for a Marchesa dress. This dress was incredibly out of the box for her usual classic look on the red carpet and I think she looked flawless. Great choice and it got people talking. Rachel Berry isn't in high school anymore!

Reese Witherspoon: In Zac Posen. Definitely wins the risk-taker of the night award for going so far out of her usual good-girl box and totally rocking it. Reese is usually a favorite of mine on the Red Carpet, but I was stunned with how amazing she looks. Marriage and happiness suits her well.

Sofia Vergara: In Vera Wang; "She sends me dresses that they zip and they close." How can you not love her?! And the color was absolutely gorgeous and a nice break from all of the neutrals

Elle MacPherson: In Zac Posen; She's kinda got a Benjamin Button thing going on and I want to know her secrets!

Nicole Richie: In Julien MacDonald; She looked absolutely flawless and I'm kinda obsessed with her bangs. Not to mention the clutch is House of Harlow. You have to appreciate a designer who stands behind her brand.

Claire Danes: In J. Mendel; How could you not love the back of this gown?? And overall, she looked stunning.

Even Rachel Wood: In Gucci; Anything with feathers and sequins, I'm totally in and all about.

I've mentioned before that this unseasonably warm weather in the Carolinas is not helping with my Spring Fever. It's January and it seems that it hasn't dropped below 40 during the day here in Raleigh. In any event, when I received the Nordstrom January catalog in the mail and it had the above outfit highlighted, I was beyond in love. I'm a sucker for pleats.

Awkward & Awesome Thursday

36 weeks and counting.... Being pregnant brings a whole new definition to the word awkward.

Awkward:

My swollen appendages As my Nordstrom shoe guy told me, "it looks like your feet were punched in the face" (Yes, I have a shoe guy and I recommend that you get one as well. They know all of the good sales).
My lack of depth perception So I might constantly run my pregnant belly into EVERYTHING (people, corners, doors, walls...you get the picture).
Falling in a crowded mall I took a digger over Christmas in front of easily 30 people. Unfortunately, this means that I am grounded (e.g., off of heels) for the remainder of my pregnancy per Hubs. I mostly agree with him, except I own like 2 pairs of flats which are more uncomfortable that my platforms. Awesome.
Lack of wedding ring Nothing solicits more comments, stares, and looks than a pregnant, seemingly unwed woman....oh wait, when I pick up beer at the store for Hubs, I really get some looks.

Wedding Band Problem solved by MoMA's Acrylic Diamond Rings

Awesome:

Night time showers These might be the only thing getting me through the last trimester
Peppermint Tea Again, this nightly indulgence might be the only other thing getting me through
Nursery It's finally complete!! YAY! (Post on this to come later)
Hubs I've said this before and I'll say it again, he rocks my world. He has been such a trooper throughout these nine months and he continues to be such a rock. I am a lucky lucky woman.
Meeting Liam We'll get to meet our little one ANY day now. Unfortunately I'm under no false hope that he will come early, or on time even. I'm banking on early February. Should I start a pool?

Write This Down

To say that I am stationary obsessed would be an understatement. I have drawers dedicated to different types of stationary in our desk. My mother instilled in me the importance of correspondence and thank you notes as a young child and I still write them diligently to this day. To that end, I love to have pretty pieces of paper to write on; maybe it just makes me feel a little more fancy, but I like to think that the recipient appreciates it as well. I have some personal favorite stationary sources: Crane & Co, Kate Spade, Vera Wang, Papyrus, Graphique de France, and Erin Condren to name a few. I also find value in having personalized stationary made; Check of Sugar Paper, Erin Condren, and Crane & Co for fantastic and unique products for perfect personalization. My other recommendation is to find local stores that offer stationary. I find some of my most favorite items from places that are local storefronts.

Added bonus, this week is National Letter Writing Week so pick up a piece of paper and write a quick note to a friend just to say hi. Messages via Facebook and Twitter, that was so 2011.

I'm a bit partial to Stuart Weitzman; not only are his shoes absolutely stunning, but I also wore a pair of his at our wedding, which makes me infinitely more in love with the brand. When I read that Stuart Weitzman had teamed up with several hollywood starlets to co-design shoes for which all proceeds benefit Ovarian Cancer research, I was even more hooked. The collection ranges from $425 to $495. My favorite? Olivia Palermo's scrumptious confections that she even appears to love based on the amount of times she's been spotted sporting them down the red carpet.

Weekend in Pictures

[Parker & Otis - Durham NC]

This weekend we had a last minute visit from our fabulous friends and godson, whom we are pretty much obsessed with. We spend the weekend going to some of our favorite places in the Triangle area (Parker and Otis for lunch and TASU for dinner) and hanging with our most favorite couple. Our Godson is now 18 months old and is at such a fun stage (not like he isn't always at a fun stage) so we spent the time chasing after him. Then the weekend was finished with brunch with another dear friend at The Remedy Diner in Raleigh and football playoffs. I'm always amazed by what great food options the Triangle has to offer and The Remedy Diner is a place that you should absolutely go. They offer a great brunch menu and gluten free options as well. It's a great atmosphere and conveniently located. Definitely worth checking out.

We seem to be in full-on nesting mode (and Hubs is slightly concerned to go outside of a 30 mile radius should I by chance go into labor) so we are working on exploring what's around us these next couple of weeks and enjoying of final days as a family of just us. (And getting all of the sleep we can get!)

BDIB: Sequin, Sparkle, and Shine

I feel like I say this about every BDIB Challenge, but I was beyond stoked when Kristina at Pretty Shiny Sparkly announced the next challenge as sequins. Mostly because I subscribe to the mentality that sequins are a closet staple rather than a flourish to wear only on special occasions. To that end, I have SO many sequin choices in my closet, it was difficult to choose. Difficult, but not impossible.

Given my current state (e.g., 36 weeks pregnant and retaining water) I choose to style the looks as simple as possible: sequin top, blazer, leggings (yes, as pants), and that's about it. Mostly because none of my shoes fit me, but also because the less attention I can draw to my disco ball (as Hubs affectionately calls it), the better. I also love playing with different textures and the sequins with the velvet is just enough to satisfy my outfit needs.

I have a firm belief that every woman should own at least one sequin piece for the closet (at a minimum one killer cocktail dress) to bring out for that special occasion or say, a slow Wednesday or a sequin emergency. Also, since I wasn't able to play more with my look, I wanted to share some of my fave sequin looks over the years. As you can see, I don't discriminate over the appropriate event to wear sequins...every event is the perfect event. Enjoy!!

It's hard to believe that we are already deep into Spring 2012 trends; however, given the crazy weather that the Southern part of the US (and most of the US for that matter) has experienced, this Winter has felt more like Spring, so maybe it's fitting. Truthfully, Spring is a favorite of mine so I don't really mind. With that being said, here are some trends that I think are definitely worth checking out this coming season.

It's a Brad, Brad World

And we are all just living in it....

Not only did stylist to the stars Brad Goreski's new reality TV show debut on Monday on Bravo, but last week he was also named 'Exclusive Brand Stylist' for Kate Spade. I think that Kate Spade dominated in 2011 and with bringing Brad on, they definitely will continue to sky rocket in 2012. Word on the street is that his focus will be on the brand's ready-to-wear lines, which don't get nearly to notoriety that the brand's accessories receive. His eye for style is spot on for the brand and I absolutely cannot wait to see what he brings to the table.

This New Years Eve was a little different than in years past. Hubs and I spent the evening together, with just ourselves partaking in an amazing meal at Second Empire (which if you are in Raleigh, you should go-immediately). And then ringing in the new year on the couch with us and Coco. It was probably my favorite new years to date. We reminisced about all of the amazing and wonderful new years past with celebrating with our friends and talked about all of the exciting new adventures that await us in 2012. It was perfect in every way.

Holiday Florals

Truth: There is nothing better in my mind than a good peony. I'm downright obsessed with these confections. I've always been drawn to them which is why they were my wedding flower and I purchase them every time I see them in the store. So this holiday season when I was looking for a floral arrangement to bring to my mother for the holidays, I went straight to my go-to. Unfortunately I was unable to execute what I was exactly looking for; however, I was able (with the assistance of Whole Foods) to execute something that I was pretty stoked about the end result.

I love the idea of an unconventional flower for the holidays. And the wonderful think about peonies is that they only get more beautiful as they continue to open. By the time we left my parents house, they were absolutely stunning. While I love the holiday tried and true (amaryllis and paper whites), I think this arrangement was absolutely perfect!

2011 was quite a year for us: lots of travel (LA, Germany (twice), Chicago, Vegas, Jordan); we're expecting our first and all of the craziness that goes along with that -and that was just personally. With the year coming to a close, I simply couldn't resist running down the best of the year from a fashion, beauty, and pop culture perspective.

Best Fashion Trends:

[J Brand]

Colored Denim hit the fashion scene in a veritable rainbow of colors. I adore this trend; it's super fun, young, and adds a great twist to classic denim.

[Adian Mattox Sequin Dress]

Sparkle: Sequins and glitter have appeared in everything from dresses, to shoes, to accessories this year. For me, I don't think it gets any better that a fully sequined dress, but then again, I consider sequins a closet staple.

Minis: Who doesn't like to show a little leg? I loved that hemlines went shorter this year.

[JCrew Perfect Shirt]

Leopard has been one of those prints that has come and gone year after year, but this year, it came back in full force. Retailers and designers have designed a variety of pieces in this (what I think is) a timeless print. Some of my faves are from JCrew, but there are plenty more out there.

Arm Candy I have been a huge fan of layer multiple bracelets with watches. I just adore the look and this year, it was all about the arm candy.

Designers for Less: More and more high end designers are collaborating with retailers to provide lines that are more accessible to the masses. Whether or not you agree with this approach, it has definitely been effective. Missoni for Target shut down the Target website and caused lines outside of Targets the day it was released.

Pregnancy, it's the new black. (Think about it) It must be in the water, but nearly everyone seems to be with child these days. And (luckily for me) this has caused a higher interest and need for maternity fashion. (Something that has been practically non-existant for quite some time.)

Best Brands:

JCrew: This brand has been one of my favorites year after year, but this year they really knocked it out of the park every season further proving their staying power.

Kate Spade: Kate Spade dubbed 2011 the year of color and with that a brilliant collection was born. They have solidified their place as a classic lifestyle brand from their gorgeous designs to their fun accessories and home items.

Tory Burch: Though Tory Burch is a younger brand, this smart-minded, stylish business woman has propelled her company into the forefront of fashion. Best known for their classic ballet flats, the rest of her collection is at a great price point, classic, timeless, but with a modern edge. Not only that but her company is woman-focused and is incredibly forward thinking.

Best Beauty:

Cat Eye Make-up: Love the retro-look that made a comeback this year.

Glitter Nails: Albeit, annoying ridiculously hard to remove from your nails, I love the trend of adding some sparkle to your mani. From polishes by Deborahh Lippmann to OPI, and even using Martha Stewart Glitter as a top coat, I think this trend is definitely here to stay for a while.

Fishtail Braids: I love this take on the classic braid. It's much better for those with hair styles that have layers and is uber easy to execute. Instant upgrade to your hair style.

Ballet Bar: With the sweeping success of Black Swan and the coveted bodies that Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis sported afterwards, a fitness movement was born. Or rather, jumped on. This has been a tried and true workout for many for years and years. I'm just happy that it's come to the forefront.

Best Guilty Pleasure:

Pretty Little Liars: Sure I'm a grown woman expecting my first child, but who's to say that I can't enjoy a silly tween drama on ABC Family. And the fashion is really fanstasic.

Best Leading Man:

Ryan Gosling: This was Ryan's year. He played everything from a nameless driver to a politico to a total heart throb. I find him truly endearing and ~~adorable~~ hot.

Best Comeback:

Britney Spears: Let's be honest here: Brit has had a rough few years. This year, she released Femme Fatale, seemingly got her life back in order, launched a successful global tour, and got engaged. Kudos to Britney for being a true comeback kid. Everyone loves a comeback!

Biggest Farewell:

Steve Jobs: Say what you want about the man, but his brilliance in the business world and as an innovator speaks for itself. His death definitely was a loss, not only to Apple, but to the world.

The 20s are definitely make a resurgence in their influence of fashion, beauty, and lifestyle as of late. It's definitely a trend I can get behind. (As is the remake of the movie that is currently being filmed in Australia)

Investment Pieces

Since I became interested in fashion, I've been working to build up my investment pieces. I love the idea of getting pieces that can be used for years to come and will hold (and in some cases increase) in value. The key to investment pieces is to select brands AND specific pieces from those collections that have withstood the test of time.

Classic Purse [Louis Vuitton Speedy 30, Chanel Classic Flap, Hermes Birkin]

Vuitton, the French fashion house founded in 1854, has certainly withstood the test of time. Originally known for their travel trunks, the brand is now synonymous with luxury. For women who are looking to purchase their first LV piece, I would high recommend the Speedy 30 bag. The Speedy bag comes in a variety of different patterns, all of which are fairly classic, and sizes. For me, the 30 was the perfect size - not too small and big enough to carry a lot of things that I needed on a daily basis.

Chanel, another French fashion house established in the early 1900s, is known for everything from clothing to jewelry to perfume to accessories. Of their accessory line, the Classic Chanel Flap and 2.55 are the most well-known and timeless pieces. This bag is definitely on my list and has been for awhile.

Hermes, another French fashion house (are you seeing a trend yet?), was founded in 1837 and are best known for their scarves and the famous Birkin bag. Named after the British actress, Jane Birkin who assisted in its design, this bag is as difficult to obtain as it is coveted by most fashionistas and celebrities alike.

Classic Shoe [Christian Louboutin, Chanel Ballet Flat]

Shoes are a tricky item. There are a lot of classic shoes out there that have withstood the test of time and in discussing this item with several people, they were on the fence. Since shoes get so much wear and tear, are they really investment pieces? And if so, many of the shoe designers are newer to the scene so how can you measure their significance and label them "investment pieces"? When I think shoes, there are several designers and specific designs that come to mind.

Christian Louboutin, although only around for 20 years, has definitely made his mark on the fashion industry with his amazing shoe designs that make women swoon. I would recommend if you are going to purchase something from his collection as an 'investment piece', pick something that is more classic. While his designs are to-die-for, you might want to start your collection with something that you can get more frequent use out of and show off those red-soled beauties.

And of course, Chanel has made my list again. The classic ballet flats have definitely withstood the test of time and I would absolutely deem an investment piece.

Trench [Burberry Trench]

Burberry, a British luxury company, was founded in 1856 with the focus on the development of outdoor attire. Therefore it should come as no surprise that their classic trench and other variations have long-time been named as a closet staple. And who doesn't love the Burberry check print?!

Jewelry [Cartier, Tiffany]

Jewelry is definitely something that has been around for quite some time and is here to stay. Clearly diamonds have become the standard: engagement rings, anniversary bands, stud earrings, and necklaces, to name a few items - are fantastic pieces to add to your jewelry box.

With regards to brands: I would absolutely endorse Cartier and Tiffany. Cartier is first and foremost known for their watches, but most recently their Love collection has gained some traction.

Tiffany and Company is another brand that makes women's hearts go pitter-patter. The little blue box speaks volumes. While they have a treasure trove of wonderful designers that are designing collections for them now, I would recommend to pick something more classic to start out your collection. Check out their bead collection or 1837 collection for your first pieces.

Trend Alert: Men-gagement Rings

For those in South America, the idea of engagement rings for men is not a new or different idea. In fact, American celebrities, such as Michael Buble, have worn engagement rings as of late. (He was engaged to an Argentinian). However, this trend seems to be traveling north into the States and across the pond into Europe.

Call me old-fashioned, but I think that men encroaching on my territory is a little unnecessary. I think that engagement rings should be solely for women. I love the tradition behind it and I think that it is a special tradition that should be upheld. I, personally, hope this trend doesn't catch on, but hey, stranger things have happened.

What are your thoughts? Do engagement rings solely belong to the women or should we be more open to equal opportunity when it comes to engagement jewelry?

Fragrance Search

Truth: I am ADD when it comes to fragrances. I am in constant search of the perfect scent. I roam the aisles of Nordstrom and Sephora unable to to find exactly what I'm looking for. Unfortunately for me and the wonderfully patient beauty counter professionals, I don't know what I'm looking for. To date, I've stuck by my two tried and true fragrances: Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue and Juicy Couture Viva La Juicy.

In need of a change, I have started the search for the ideal fragrance. Pregnancy is probably not the appropriate time to execute this (your sense of smell is way sensitive and your body's hormones play with the notes of the fragrances differently), but none-the-less here I am. I've narrowed my search down to two: Miss Dior Cherie and Tom Ford's Violet Blonde.

What do you think? Are there any other fragrances I should try-out before I make a purchase?

A Weekend Full of Love (And Pictures)

I feel like I probably have said this a lot recently, but we are incredibly fortunate. Not only are both of us in excellent places in our lives and expecting our first baby in January, but was have an incredibly wonderful group of friends that we are happy/proud/humbled to call our own. This past weekend, our friends from college gathered in the DC area (on the eve of the ACC Championship Game, no less) to celebrate the upcoming arrival of our little Liam.

Our good friends hosted the party for us and did such an amazing job. I was floored with the attention to detail, the personal touches, and the amazing menu. My girlfriend and bestie is an event planner by trade and has an amazing sense of style so it should have come as no surprise to me, but she really upped her game. Since it was a couples shower, it was definitely more of a social affair (just how I like showers!) and she incorporate my favorite print (chevron) into practically everything, along with grey and yellow (I die over this color combo). Enjoy the details!

Guests were asked to bring a book to help grow Baby Mac's library. I loved the idea of people bringing their favorites, books that their children loved, and books that they loved. It'll be so nice to read to Liam from these books and tell him about all the wonderful people who contributed and why the books are so meaningful to them.

Among my faves was a book given to me by the hostess, This Little Piggy Went to Prada, which is a take on all of the classic nursery rhymes. How clever and super fun! Liam will be well versed in the designers by the time he is in preschool.

The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show is something I look forward to every year. The themes are executed with such amazing precision, the costuming is impeccable, the performances and music are amazing, and the models are absolutely stunning. Secretly, or not so secretly, I've always coveted those angel wings. Being a former employee of the lingerie chain, I used to plot as to how I could bring some of those lovelies home. Winter Beauty Must-Haves

Despite the fact that there's been a ridiculous heat wave on the eastern seaboard, winter is, in fact, approaching and with that comes a change in my beauty regime, both for my skin and for my hair. My skin is usually pretty persnickety and the dry, cold winter months do not make it very happy. I'm partial to Clinique as it tends to work best with my skin, is at a good price point, and I've had excellent results with their products. My hair always tends to be on the dryer side since I use heat products pretty much every day, but in the winter, I up my game with more frequent deep conditionings and more serious shampoos/conditioners.

'Tis the season! Christmas is arguably one of my most favorite holidays. I start listening to Christmas music after Halloween (yes, you can judge me); I love holiday decor; the sight of Starbucks red cups and peppermint mochas on their menu makes my heart go pitter-patter; I obsess over the perfect gifts for the recipients on our 'good' list; I obsess equally over the wrapping; I could watch A Christmas Carol (Muppets version, of course) and Love Actually every day for the month of December - You get the idea. However, this year we have SO much going on that I'm lacking the holiday inspiration that I usually can't seem to bottle up. In an effort to jump start my holiday cheer, I sought out the help of pinterest and thought everyone could use some extra holiday cheer. This year, like so many other years, I haven't taken the time to think about all of the amazing things that are in my life. I am privileged beyond words and am so grateful for all of the wonderful things that we have in our lives right now (and in the future). It's a shame that I don't take more time to acknowledge and appreciate everything that I have. (New Year's Resolution 2012, perhaps?!) This year, like me, I hope you take time to recognize all of the blessings in your lives today and make an effort to do more everyday. And if those blessings happen to be people, take the time to thank them for their part in your life.
